But, if you’ve gone this far without one do you even need one? In this article, we give the lowdown of the best air purifiers we’ve seen and an in-depth guide on what exactly they do, what are their benefits and whether or not air purifiers are worth your money.

Nursery Baby Air Purifiers UK Reviews

Levoit Air Purifier

Levoit Air Purifier

The Levoit Air purifier is a fantastic semi-entry-level model which is among the cheapest and best air purifier deals on the UK market. It features a H13 true HEPA filter which traps ultra fine particles, variable fan speeds which includes slow for night time and fast for during the day if there’s a build up.

It has all the features you’d need to have it in the room a baby sleeps in, they are quiet mode, no/dim light setting and a strong fan to clean a small to mid sized room (covers 322 square feet). The one thing we would have liked is a carbon monoxide detector, which is absent in most except the H-Purifier.

The drawbacks are that the motor is not as powerful as some other models so this will struggle in larger homes, especially homes with pets or ones which are in places of high pollution and allergens such busy city centers. But, for personal use in the room a baby sleeps or the nursery it will be just fine.

Air purifiers are rather expensive so it’s a breath of fresh air to find one so affordable. Great for for parents and/or children with existing allergies or skin conditions like eczema.

Hoover H-Purifier 300/500/700

Hoover H-Purifier 300/500/700

The Hoover Direct range of air purifiers are heavy duty beasts, which can be seen from their size. They’re better suited for larger homes and homes which regularly get polluted with allergens. It certainly has a presence when its in place and the fans are big enough that you can ‘feel’ it get to work on the air. It has a clean air delivery rate (CADR) or 260 square feet which is up there with the very best of them.

The true HEPA filter inside is large which increases its lifespan (from needing to replace) and traps more in a shorter space of time over cheaper brands. It will capture 99.97% of ultra-fine particles and actively deactivated pollen, not just trap it. It also features night mode which slows down the fan, uses less energy and turns off the light with easy touch screen settings and almost acts like a quiet white noise machine. Lastly, it has a specific allergies mode which turns it up to max – but this is quite loud and uses more energy.

This is a serious piece of kit. The 300 model is entry level (for Hoover) but nonetheless a very powerful air purifier, the 500 comes with a handy diffuser which can clean surfaces with H-Biotics or it can add a pleasant aroma and the 700 model comes with a humidifier which can be great for when a child has a cough as dry air can make it worse.

These are not cheap devices but among the best for larger homes, homes which regularly become polluted or for parents of babies or children who do suffer from allergies or skin problems. Despite its size, it can slip into a baby’s room nicely and it does contain the aforementioned ultra quiet mode (no light, slow fan) which can work quietly in the corner without waking anyone up.

Dyson Pure Cool Me Personal Purifying Fan

Dyson Pure Cool Me Personal Purifying Fan

Perfect for summer and hot days and nights, the Dyson air purifier both cools and purifies the air. Inside is a true HEPA filter and activated carbon filter which traps the particles and blows cooled down pure air in a direction of choice.

The purification element of the product is suitable for small to medium rooms (covers 400 square feet)- it’s not the largest air purifier on the market despite the cost of it being akin to one. If you have a large home then this is not the best choice. However, it will still work hard to trap 99.97% of particles such as dust mites, mold spores and other harmful particles from the air.

The cooling element, however, is a huge boon for parents. It could be argued that a room that is too hot does more harm to a good night’s sleep than anything the filters can pick up. Bare this in mind next time you shop for a fan during the hotter months if you don’t already have an air purifier.

Dyson air purifiers are great for baby because it’s quiet, it’s quite small and easy to tuck away and has decent night-time settings. The cooling element on top makes it world class.

The Dyson air purifier is a well put-together machine just like their vacuum cleaners, you will not be disappointed in its operation and ability to improve indoor air quality whether it’s for a baby or for yourself.

Air Purifier for Babies Buyer’s Guide

What does an air purifier do

In a nutshell, air purifiers suck in ambient air and traps small allergens within a filter before blowing purified air back out again, eventually clearing an entire room of all these small pollutants. The harmful stuff in question are typically seasonal pollen, dust, mould spores, smoke, vape. These fine allergens are too small to see and can be as small as 0.3 microns – even the tidiest of homes can have them.

These small objects can be inhaled or touch the skin when they settle which can cause allergic reactions in some people and certainly aggravate asthma sufferers but generally harmless as they are all around us.

Who benefits from an air purifier?

The biggest beneficiaries are people who regularly suffer from allergies and those who live in areas of high air pollution such as city centres, this benefit can be felt by parents and babies of course especially when they have an activated carbon filter. Being exposed regularly over time can lead to serious health issues if the levels are high enough.

During spring and summer hay fever is rife, for people who suffer every year an air purifier can make the home a safe haven free from spores in the air. This will lead to less symptoms, a better quality of life and better night’s sleep but it won’t cure anything -bare that in mind.

Secondly, dog and cat owners will benefit as an air purifier clears the room from “dander” – small flakes of dead skin dogs and cats naturally shed and a common allergen. Children and babies who may have an animal hair allergy will benefit greatly for less symptoms and a better night’s snooze.

Thirdly, and a lesser known benefit, are for babies and children who suffer with eczema. Airborne allergens such as pet dander can aggravate sensitive skin stopping it from recovering quickly or just flare it up. We highly recommend an air purifier for baby rooms if they have eczema for this reason alone to keep potential problems in the filters and away from your little one, great along other aids such as wipes.

Are air purifiers safe for babies?

Air purifiers are generally safe around babies (it is still an electrical device, though) as they are a filtration system which circulates purified air around a baby’s nursery. It does not reduce the amount of oxygen or air in a given space and it doesn’t pump anything new into the air, with the exception of those with a built in diffuser/humidifier. The only exception and one we would absolutely not recommend are air purifiers which produce ozone to chemically treat the air. We have not listed any of those in this article.

Otherwise, air purifiers are safe for clean home air free from allergens for your baby to breathe and rest easy.
